What this site records

Counting visits

When a page is shown, the browser sends us three things: the path you are on, the address of the page that linked you here, if any, and whether the window is phone, tablet or desktop width. That is the whole message. The server adds the date, turns your IP address into a short hash with a secret that is generated when the process starts and changes every day, and appends one line to a file.

The hash exists so that one person reading four pages is counted once rather than four times. Because the secret is never written down and rotates daily, the line cannot be turned back into an address, and two days of reading cannot be linked to each other. We do not set a cookie, we do not store an identifier in your browser, and we do not fingerprint your device.

Server logs

The web server keeps a standard access log: the requesting address, the time, the page, the response code, the size, the referring page and the browser's user-agent string. It is what tells us that a crawler took 450 pages in an hour or that a page is returning an error. Logs rotate and are deleted after about two weeks.

Cloudflare

The site is served through Cloudflare, which terminates the connection, filters attacks and caches pages. Cloudflare therefore sees every request, keeps its own logs of them, and adds its analytics script to pages requested by a browser. That script measures page timing and counts visits; it sets no cookie. Cloudflare acts as our processor and its own privacy notice covers what it holds.

Email

If you write to the corrections address, the message sits in our mailbox and is forwarded to the person who maintains the site. We keep it while the correction is being made and reply to the address you wrote from. Nothing else happens to it: no list, no newsletter, no sharing.

What we never do

• Sell tickets, take payments or hold any payment details.
• Run advertising, or let an advertising network see you here.
• Sell, rent or share what we record with anyone.
• Build a profile of a reader, or follow one across other sites.

Leaving the site

Every booking link goes to the operator's own site, and operator pages link to their timetables and fare pages. Once you are there, that company's privacy notice applies, not ours.

Write to [email protected]. Since nothing here is tied to a person, there is usually nothing to look up, delete or export — but if you think something about you has been recorded, say so and we will check and tell you what we find.
