About this crossing
Of Salt Spring Island's three ferry terminals, Vesuvius Bay on the northwest shore is the one linked to Crofton, near Duncan, and so to the Cowichan Valley side of Vancouver Island. Paired with the island's southern ferry from Fulford Harbour, this 25-minute crossing makes a sea route between the Duncan area and the Saanich Peninsula that avoids the Malahat highway altogether: drive across Salt Spring and continue on Fulford Harbour to Swartz Bay. BC Ferries sells the fare here as a return, so one payment covers both directions and no ticket is asked for on the way back. There are no reservations, and check-in at Crofton closes five minutes before sailing.
